Lower your credit card processing fees — for real

Credit card processing fees are one of the most padded bills a small business pays, because the markup is buried under interchange you can't change. Bloatweiler reads your actual merchant statement, calculates your true effective rate, and routes every move through your approval.

No vendor changes without your approval. No guaranteed savings.

What credit card processing bloat looks like

Your processor wants you to watch one number — the rate they quoted. The bloat lives everywhere else: the markup, the surcharges nobody itemizes, and the hardware lease that outlived the terminal.

How Bloatweiler trims your card processing bill

Human-reviewed, evidence-first.

01

We read the actual statement

Send your latest full merchant statement. A human — not a bot — separates interchange and assessments (the parts no one can change) from the processor markup and junk fees (the parts you can).

02

We calculate your effective rate + find the gap

We divide your total fees by your total volume to get your real effective rate, then benchmark your markup and line-item fees against current interchange-plus pricing — with evidence from your own statement.

03

You approve every move

Findings come back as Savings Opportunity Cards. If you say go, we pursue a re-rate, a junk-fee removal, or a switch to interchange-plus — nothing happens to your merchant account without your sign-off.

An example, not a promise

Real findings ship with evidence, a range, and a confidence level. Never guaranteed. The card below is an invented example.

Example
Payments Bundled / tiered processor

A “2.6% flat rate” that was really a 3.4% effective rate

A retailer on a tiered plan was quoted 2.6% but, once monthly junk fees and downgrades were counted against actual volume, the effective rate landed near 3.4% — a meaningful gap on every dollar processed.

Evidence: Statement: $24/mo PCI fee, $15/mo statement + batch fees, a terminal lease line, and a “non-qualified” tier catching a chunk of keyed transactions at a higher rate.

$200–$600/mo

medium confidence

Next step (you approve): Move to transparent interchange-plus pricing and drop the lease + PCI fee — only after you review and approve the options.

Effective rate, interchange fees, and the three layers of every card bill

Every card transaction you accept is priced in three layers. Interchange fees go to the card-issuing bank and are set by Visa and Mastercard — nobody can negotiate them. Assessments are the small network fees on top, also fixed. The third layer is your processor's markup, and that is the only part anyone can actually lower. The trick processors use is bundling all three into a single tiered or flat rate so you can't tell the negotiable part from the fixed part.

The honest way to see through it is your effective rate: total fees divided by total volume for the month. If you process $40,000 and pay $1,360 in fees, your effective rate is 3.4% — regardless of what the headline rate said. Interchange-plus pricing exposes the layers (interchange + assessments + a stated markup), while tiered pricing hides them. We read your statement, compute the effective rate, and show you where the markup and junk fees are padding it.

Junk fees, terminal leases, and finding the cheapest credit card processing for your business

Most of the merchant fees you can actually cut are the ones with names that sound official: PCI compliance fees, monthly statement and batch fees, gateway and account fees, and “regulatory” lines that are really markup. Terminal leases are the worst offender — a lease that bills $40 a month for years on hardware you could have bought outright is pure bloat. Surcharging or cash-discount programs can shift some cost to the customer, but they come with state rules and disclosure requirements, so they're an option to weigh, not an automatic yes.

“Cheapest credit card processing” isn't really about one magic processor — it's about getting onto transparent interchange-plus pricing, killing the junk fees and the lease, and re-rating the markup to what the market actually charges for your volume. We do that read for free as your first Bloat Audit, and we never change your account or contact a vendor without your approval.

Questions, sniffed out

What's a normal credit card processing fee?

Most small businesses land at an effective rate of roughly 2.5–4% once every fee is counted against volume. The fixed parts — interchange and assessments — usually run around 1.7–2.3%; the rest is processor markup and junk fees, which is the part that's actually negotiable. We calculate your real effective rate from your statement so you know which number you're looking at.

What is interchange-plus pricing versus tiered pricing?

Interchange-plus shows you the real interchange and assessments as a pass-through, plus a clearly stated processor markup — so you can see exactly what you're paying for. Tiered (and most “flat rate”) pricing bundles everything into qualified / mid / non-qualified buckets that hide the markup. Interchange-plus is almost always the more transparent and usually the cheaper structure.

Do you switch my payment processor automatically?

Never automatically. We find the savings and show you the options with evidence from your own statement. If you decide to re-rate, drop junk fees, or switch processors, you approve it first — no vendor is contacted and nothing on your merchant account changes without your sign-off.

Is the credit card processing audit really free?

Your first Bloat Audit is free and takes about two minutes to open. If we find savings worth acting on, we'll explain any next-step options — including how we're compensated — before anything happens. No guaranteed savings.

How much can I save on merchant fees?

It depends entirely on your statement — sometimes there's a lease and a stack of junk fees worth a few hundred a month, sometimes your rate is already fair and we'll tell you that. We only ever show honest ranges with a confidence level, never a guarantee.
